In a recorded talk at the I&M Canal Visitor Center, illustrator and historian Tom Willcockson walks us through the 18 panels he created for The History of the I&M Canal exhibit—and shares the research, creative decisions and hands-on work behind them.

Follow the journeys of Marquette and Jolliet, discover Illinois’ role in the American Revolution as we celebrate America 250, and learn how the system of locks moved boats along the 96-mile canal. Tom also discusses his background and the process of turning historical research into detailed maps and illustrations, combining hand-drawn artwork with computer graphics.

Then come see the details for yourself. Explore the exhibit at the I&M Canal Visitor Center, and make time for a scratch-made breakfast or lunch at the Lock 16 Café.
