Now on display in the historic Vintage Room at the I&M Canal Visitor Center, The History of the I&M Canal is a new 18-panel exhibit featuring original illustrations by Tom Willcockson, acclaimed artist and author of Passage to Chicago.

Beginning with the region’s Native Americans and continuing through European exploration, the birth of the United States, Illinois’ journey to statehood, the construction of the Illinois & Michigan Canal and its lasting impact on commerce, transportation and settlement, the exhibit traces the remarkable story of the region through to the modern era, including the designation of the I&M Canal National Heritage Area—the first National Heritage Area established in the United States.

Whether you’re visiting the canal for the first time or have spent years exploring its communities and trails, this engaging exhibit offers a fresh perspective on the people, places and events that made the I&M Canal one of America’s most significant historic corridors.
