Become an Illinois & Michigan Canal Junior Ranger!

 
Have some fun and learn about America’s first National Heritage Area. You’ll receive a Junior Ranger badge, certificate and a whole lot of knowledge that you can share with others about the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Don’t forget to share your Junior Ranger Certification Stories on social media using #iandmcanal.
 
 

How to Participate

Step #1

To become a certified Junior Ranger, you’ll need a Junior Ranger booklet and a copy of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area’s map brochure (where you’ll find all the answers to complete the Junior Ranger certification!). Both are free and available at the I&M Canal Visitors Center,  participating attractions in the I&M Canal National Heritage Area, Illinois Tourism Offices and Illinois Convention and Visitors Bureaus. There is no fee to participate in the Junior Ranger program.

Step #2

Complete the number of Junior Ranger booklet activities according to your age.

  • Up to 6 years old – 3 activities
  • 7-9 years old – 5 activities
  • 10-12 years old – 7 activities

Step #3

Turn in your completed Junior Ranger booklet (see locations below) and be sworn in as an official Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area Junior Ranger. Once sworn in, you will receive your badge and certificate.
