Meet Artist & Author Tom Willcockson – A Celebration of the Anniversaries of the National Park Service & I&M Canal National Heritage Area

August 23 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join us for a special presentation with acclaimed artist, illustrator, cartographer and author Tom Willcockson as we celebrate two important milestones: the 110th anniversary of the National Park Service and the 42nd anniversary of the designation of the I&M Canal National Heritage Area—America’s first National Heritage Area.

Tom will discuss The History of the I&M Canal, the new exhibit now on display at the I&M Canal Visitor Center. Comprised of 18 beautifully illustrated panels, the exhibit tells the story of the canal through Tom’s original artwork, bringing to life the people, places and events that transformed Illinois and helped shape the nation.

Tom is also the author and illustrator of Passage to Chicago: A Journey on the Illinois & Michigan Canal in the Year 1860, a historically accurate and richly illustrated account of travel aboard an I&M Canal packet boat during the canal’s heyday.

During this engaging talk, Tom will share:

  • The research that goes into creating historically accurate illustrations
  • His artistic process, from historical sources to finished artwork
  • What inspires his fascination with the I&M Canal and its history
  • Behind-the-scenes stories from creating both the exhibit and Passage to Chicago
  • How art can make history more accessible and engaging

Following the discussion, there will be time for audience questions.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their copy of Passage to Chicago to be signed by Tom. Books will also be available for purchase at the Visitor Center.

This special anniversary event offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of the National Park Service, honor America’s first National Heritage Area, and hear directly from one of the region’s foremost historical artists and storytellers. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply curious about the remarkable story of the I&M Canal, you won’t want to miss this inspiring afternoon.

The event is FREE and open to all ages. Donations are encouraged.
