Third Friday Presentation – Lake Effect Science: Weather, Artificial Intelligence & The Search for a Safer Future
July 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Chicago’s maritime history has been shaped by large storms. Unexpected weather-related events like the sinking of the Lady Elgin make up the story of Chicago’s past. But new scientific methods, observations, and artificial intelligence tools can help us shape a safer future. Join Scott Collis, an atmospheric scientist from Argonne National Laboratory for a lively talk about city and lake interactions on maritime weather and learn how AI is changing the scope of science.
Scott Collis is an atmospheric scientist and head of the Geospatial Computing, Innovations, and Sensing (GCIS) department in the Environmental Science Division at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. He is a Senior Fellow at the Northwestern Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering (NAISE). Scott’s research is at the intersection of data informatics, edge computing, atmospheric science, and radar meteorology. He uses and develops open-source tools to extract geophysical insight from remotely sensed data at scale, which enables a deeper understanding of atmospheric phenomena essential for the development of next-generation meteorological models.
Members Admission is $5.00; Non-Members Admission is $10.
