Myth Busting in the Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Area – Second Sunday Lecture Series

Myth Busting in the Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Area – Second Sunday Lecture Series

Have you ever heard conflicting stories about how long the I&M Canal was in business and what its impact was? Did anyone die digging the canal and did they really get paid in whiskey? Was the canal replaced by the railroad or larger waterways? Was it Father Marquette or Louis Joliett who suggested a canal in 1673, what was their reference? Were the state boundaries moved because of the canal? The Canal Corridor Association has spent years reading primary sources to answer these questions.

Ana B. Koval, President, of the Canal Corridor Association, has been working for CCA for 27 years and is responsible for bringing The Volunteer, the only boat on the I&M for the last 75 years, to its western terminus in LaSalle.
