SUMMARY:Ottawa's Role in the Biggest Train Heist in American History - Sunday Afternoon Ottawa History
DESCRIPTION:On June 12\, 1924 around 9:00 p.m. two bandits climbed over the engine tender of R.P.O. train 57\, 30 miles outside Chicago. The two men covered the engineer and firemen at gun forcing them to stop the train near Rondout\, Illinois. \nFour other bandits were a Rondout\, staked out in black Cadillacs. As the train approached\, the four rushed and forced 12 workers out of the train. They proceeded to threaten the workers with gasses and weapons\, while securely armed with masks and explosives. Together\, the six bandits emptied the mail car of all 52 pouches containing over $2\,000\,000 in goods. \nDuring the attack\, one fatal mistake was made. The engineer had stopped the train too far past the designated spot; one of the bandits left his post\, and was shot five times by one of his own. The man survived\, but was badly wounded. This near fatal mistake would eventually lead Inspectors to those responsible.\nPresented by Chuck Stanley. $10 per person. ($9 for Museum Members). \n

SUMMARY:Presentation about General Wallace
DESCRIPTION:After spending time looking at the condition of the wall surrounding the Wallace-Dickey Cemetery on the north\nbluff in Ottawa\, both Chuck Sanders\, president of the Wallace-Dickey Cemetery Preservation Association\, and\nKeith Stehl\, Ottawa Masonry\, acknowledge it going to be a large and expensive undertaking. “We want to re-use\nas much of the original Joliet limestone as possible”\, stated Sanders.\nA dedicated group of volunteers\, mostly members of the Starved Rock Civil War Round Table\, started some\nrestoration work in 2019\, but\, the work was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This same group has handled\nthe mundane maintenance chores such as mowing the grass and collecting fallen branches for several years.\nCreated in 2021 with a goal to restore and preserve this private\, land-locked cemetery\, the Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association has begun a major fundraising effort with the goal to stabilize the existing wall\nand re-build as necessary. As a first step\, two trees will be removed\, thanks to a generous donation from a\nbenefactor.\nAs part of their fundraising efforts\, the Association is planning a Civil War re-enactment event on the grounds of\nthe Reddick Mansion on Saturday\, May 18th . Events on Sunday\, May 19th\, will include guided tours of the\ncemetery and a presentation about General Wallace at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum.\nThe cemetery dates back to early 1800s and holds the graves of several members of the Wallace and Dickey\nfamilies\, including General WHL Wallace killed in the Battle of Shiloh (and immortalized in the mural above\nJeremiah Joe’s in downtown Ottawa)\, T. Lyle Dickey\, prominent attorney of the mid 19th century\, their wives and\nchildren.\nPeople interested in helping preserve this unique part of Ottawa’s history can send donations to “Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association NFP”\, PO Box 392\, Ottawa\, Il 61350. Volunteers are also needed\, both for\nhelping at the fundraising event and for the construction/maintenance of the cemetery. People wanting more\ninformation or to volunteer can reach via the Association via e-mail at gen_wallace@outlook.com. \n
