Put your kayak skills to the test and embark on a two-hour paddle down the Des Plaines River to enjoy the spectacular views of the woods and glimpses of wildlife. Break for a picnic lunch at McKinley Wood Fredrick’s Grove then reverse your view with a 2.5-mile riverside hike through the woods back to where you started. Registration required by phone by Friday\, Aug. 8: 815-722-9470.The program will start and end at McKinley Woods Kerry Sheridan Grove. Wear shoes and clothes that can get wet\, and dont forget your lunch\, sunscreen\, a hat\, sunglasses\, a water bottle and dry socks and shoes for the hike back. This program is for advanced paddlers and enthusiastic hikers. Traveling this distance requires constant paddling. All equipment is provided\, including personal flotation devices.Both the launch and trail from parking lot are paved. The paddle will be about 3.25 miles long\, and the hike will be at least 2.5 miles long on natural surfaces. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering or submit a request online no later than 48 hours before the program. \nAges 14 or older. Participants younger than 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. \n

DESCRIPTION:This ongoing program runs from Wednesday\, May 1\, to Friday\, May 31. Preserve hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. \nTake part in the inaugural Four Rivers bird photography competition! Submit your picture of a migratory bird at McKinley Woods for a chance to win a gift certificate to the Cornell Lab Bird Academy(Opens in a new window) and new bird-feeding supplies from Wild Birds Unlimited of Joliet(Opens in a new window). Winners will be selected in two age categories: adult (18 and older) and youth (17 and younger). \nIf you’re a new birder\, challenge yourself to learn a new bird. If you’re a seasoned pro\, challenge yourself to get the perfect photograph of a migratory bird. Visit Four Rivers Environmental Education Center to check out recent sightings and learn where you’ll have the best chance to find the bird you’re looking for. \nRegister your bird photo by scanning the QR code at the photo submission stations along the trails and in the visitor center for the duration of the contest. Complete contest rules are included on the submission form. \nNo registration required. \nThis is an inclusive program\, welcoming individuals of all abilities. Four Rivers is an accessible facility.
