SUMMARY:Think & Drink: 50 Years of Preservation: Plan\, Purpose & Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:As our 50 Years to Overnight Success exhibit enters its final weeks on display\, we’re giving the spotlight to the artist and architect who helped bring it to life.\nAt our next Think & Drink\, join Bob Morris for a special behind-the-scenes look at the exhibit and the preservation movement it celebrates. Morris will share how the project came together\, how he approached recreating every building in downtown Lockport through his detailed pen-and-ink drawings\, and why this story matters. But this evening is about more than the exhibit. Over the course of his career\, Morris has personally overseen the restoration and revitalization of many of Lockport’s historic buildings. These are projects that helped shape the downtown we know today. This program is both a reflection on fifty years of preservation and a look at the life and work of someone who has played a direct role in that story.\nIf you’ve enjoyed the exhibit—or haven’t yet had a chance to see it—this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate it before it comes down one week later. \nThis is a free event. Registration is not required but appreciated to gauge attendance:\n REGISTER HERE \nBonus! Enjoy a Public Landing Restaurant discount when you register! Details below.\n

SUMMARY:Think & Drink: Ichabod Codding & The Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce our first Think & Drink of the year\, and it’s a special one.\nOur February Think & Drink will feature Lindsey Minas\, whose research on 19th-century abolitionist Ichabod Codding forms the foundation of our newest Story Wall exhibit\, Ichabod Codding: Lockport’s Forgotten Voice of Freedom (details below). Lindsey is a recent graduate of Lewis University and a graduate student at the University of Chicago. Her work explores Codding’s role in the abolitionist movement\, his ties to Lockport and Illinois\, and his influence on Abraham Lincoln and the political coalitions that helped shape the era.\nAlthough Codding is little-known today\, some people have called him the most nationally significant person to have lived in Lockport. We’re honored to share Lindsey’s student research on Codding with the wider public.\nWe’re also thrilled to welcome Dr. Larry McClellan\, a leading scholar of the Underground Railroad aabolitionist activity in the Midwest\, who will open the evening with a short presentation before introducing Lindsey’s talk. His perspective helps place Lindsey’s research within the broader story of abolition and resistance in northern Illinois.\nRegistration is encouraged to gauge audience size.

SUMMARY:Think & Drink: Saving Lockport's Central Square
DESCRIPTION:Our next Think & Drink brings us a story at the very heart of Lockport’s history. \nIn the 1970s\, the Old Central School building\, a Lockport landmark since its construction in 1896\, was threatened with demolition. A determined group of citizens\, business leaders\, and preservationists\, including a young Jerry Adelmann\, stepped in to save it. Their victory not only preserved the building as Central Square\, home to city offices and community gatherings\, but also launched Lockport’s modern preservation movement. \nAdelmann will share this pivotal story\, complete with courtroom battles\, citizen action\, and the vision that shaped Lockport’s future. It’s a rare chance to hear from one of the leaders who helped make preservation a cornerstone of our community. \nGerald “Jerry” Adelmann is a sixth-generation Lockport resident whose lifelong commitment to preservation and conservation has shaped both his hometown and the region. He played a key role in saving Lockport’s Central Square\, restoring the Gaylord Building\, and creating the I&M Canal Nation Heritage Area\, the nation’s first National Heritage Area. From 1988–2023\, he led Openlands\, advancing landmark conservation projects across northeastern Illinois. \nRegistration is not required but appreciated to gauge attendance: https://savingcentralsquare.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Now on display in the Gaylord Building’s first-floor gallery\n through July 14th! \n\nAfrican Americans called the Joliet region home before its incorporation in 1852. They have built up the community\, found jobs\, and enjoyed life in the Des Plaines River Valley.\n\nIn spite of this long history\, the Black community has often been on the periphery of historical narratives.  As a way to increase the scope of history\, this exhibit highlights four African American organizations that contribute to the region’s diversity.\n\nThe scope of this grant-funded initiative included a traveling banner exhibit and public programs. These banners are currently on display in the Gaylord Building’s first-floor gallery.\n\nThey can also be viewed online at the Lewis University History Center.\n\nThe Lewis University History Center partnered with Second Baptist Church\, Mount Zion Baptist Church\, The National Hook-up of Black Women Joliet Inc.\, and Warren-Sharpe Community Center on this project\, which focused on regional historical collections and allowed them to broaden their scope and facilitate the stories of historically marginalized peoples. In turn\, this served to broaden the scope of the collection of the Adelmann Regional History Collection (ARHC) at Lewis University.\n
