SUMMARY:Blues Brothers Con: The Sequel
DESCRIPTION:Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi Return to Old Joliet Prison for Second Annual Blues Brothers Con\nJoliet Area Historical Museum pays tribute to the iconic Blues Brothers film on Saturday\, August 17th at Old Joliet Prison \nJOLIET\, Ill. – The Joliet Area Historical Museum will host its second annual Blues Brothers Con featuring actors Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi\, reprising their roles as The Blues Brothers at Old Joliet Prison on Saturday\, August 17th\, 2024. The festival will once again transform the 16-acre historic prison site into a tapestry of sights and sounds to honor the iconic Blues Brothers film – that was filmed on its grounds – as well as celebrate Blues music’s influence on the prison throughout its history. \nThe ‘Blues Brothers’ film is about passing on the love of Blues music to a new generation\, said Greg Peerbolte\, chief executive officer of the Joliet Area Historical Museum. The Prison’s connection to the Blues dates back to the 1932 recording of Memphis Minnie’s ‘Joliet Bound.’ Blues music helps us to confront – and heal – the Prison’s often difficult historic legacy. Following the incredible fan response to last year’s event\, we are extremely grateful to Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi Pisano and the Belushi family to pass on the film itself – and the music it cherishes – to new generations. \nAykroyd and Belushi will emcee a stacked lineup of iconic and diverse Chicago Blues performers featuring\, Curtis Salgado\, Ronnie Baker Brooks\, Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials\, and Al Spears & The Hurricane Project. \nThe evening will be appropriately capped off by a Maxwell Street-style Blues jam session where Dan\, Jim and other Blues Brothers alumni will take part in a special encore performance featuring hits from the film. Blues Brothers fans can also expect a variety of experiences\, appearances and one-of-a-kind photo ops throughout the day. \nProceeds from the event support the operations of the Joliet Area Historical Museum\, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit that has operated educational tours and community programs at the Old Joliet Prison Historic Site since 2018. The Old Joliet Prison is currently undergoing restorations but is still open to visitors daily for self-guided tours. \n  \nHotel & Ticket Packages \nOne-night stay + New Orleans North ticket (8/16) + Blues Brothers Con ticket (8/17) \nStarting at $185. Add more tickets if needed! SEE ALL HOTEL PACKAGES \nEvent Location: Inside the walls of Old Joliet Prison\, 1125 N. Collins St.\, Joliet\, Ill. SUMMARY:Second Sunday Lecture Series: " Casting An Historic Vote" Suffrage for Women in Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Prior to 1920\, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local\, state\, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal\, the path to women’s suffrage was infused with sexism and racism and triggered a fear of feminism whose roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the suffrage movement\, they were not the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin\, the first woman to vote in Illinois\, to Ida B. Wells\, a woman who did not let racism silence her voice\, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists in Illinois. Jeanne Schultz Angel is the Director of Learning Experiences & Historical Resources for Naper Settlement. She is a nonprofit administrator and museum professional with more than 24 years working within cultural institutions. She holds a BA in Anthropology and an MA in History from Illinois State University. Angel has been the executive director of three Chicagoland historical organizations: St. Charles Heritage Center\, Lombard Historical Society/Sheldon Peck Homestead\, and the Nineteenth Century Club in Oak Park. In addition\, she served as the executive director of the Illinois Association of Museums. Most recently\, she was the lead historian in Seeking Charlie: Connecting the Dots Left by a Freedom Seeker in Illinois\, a grant funded by the Association of African American Life & History and the National Park Service. \n

The Joliet Pr*son\, with its iconic castellated gothic architecture was designed by Chicago earliest architect W.W. Boyington\, who also designed the Chicago Water Tower. The use of Joliet limestone was a trademark of Boyington’s designs and this locally quarried stone was used to erect structures all around the country. The Pr*son in Joliet replaced the first state penitentiary in Alton\, built on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in 1831. The privately-managed Pr*son quickly degraded into a state of horrendous conditions. Noted reformer Dorothea Dix personally petitioned the Illinois General Assembly to construct a new penitentiary after inspection the Alton Pr*son in 1847. \nWhile action from the State legislature and some construction occurred in prior years\, May 22\, 1858 marks the “beginning” of the Joliet Pr*son when fifty-three inmates arrived at a small structure\, which still stands\, to begin the work of constructing the larger Pr*son around themselves. This included the quarrying of the limestone from two adjacent quarries. \nUpon its opening\, the Chicago Tribune declared glowingly\, “We came away fully impressed with the belief that the important trusts at Joliet are in good hands\, that there is growing a State work which will be for long years to come the pride of her citizens.” The image of the Joliet Pr*son\, however\, quickly changed. By 1878\, the Pr*son was filled well over capacity with nearly 2\,000 inmates. Reports of unsanitary and dangerous conditions emerged and by 1905\, calls for the closure of the “old Pr*son” were made. The 1926 construction of Stateville Penitentiary in what is now Crest Hill was intended to close the Pr*son\, but it continued to house offenders until 2002\, when it was finally closed by Governor George Ryan as a budgetary measure. \nThe Pr*son is probably best known today for its most popular\, albeit fictional inmate – “Joliet Jake” Blues from the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Since then\, the Pr*son has made a number of appearances in films in television\, including as the character of “Fox River State Penitentiary” in the critically acclaimed Fox series “Pr*son Break\,” and in smaller scenes in Derailed\, Let’s Go to Pr*son\, and recently\, Empire. \nSadly\, despite this interest from Hollywood\, the Pr*son remained closed\, and in addition to damage from the elements\, was subject to rampant vandalism\, including several acts of arson. Attempts were made to find suitable options for reuse\, including tourism\, by the Collins Street Task Force of concerned public and private leaders\, but these efforts were stalled by the Great Recession of 2008. Continued vandalism and destruction of the site led Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk to personally petition the state government to allow the City of Joliet to take control of the property in December of 2017. Since then\, the City looked to the Joliet Area Historical Museum to take a leadership role in operating tours at the site. In partnership with the City\, the Museum identified a number of community partners to form a public/private partnership entity\, The Old Joliet Pr*son Preservation Coalition. To date\, the project has been met with an enthusiastic response from the community of Joliet\, culminating in over 6\,500 volunteer hours\, one million dollars in in-kind labor and donations\, and nearly $200\,000 in funds raised to benefit the site. \nTrue to its historic legacy\, the Old Joliet Pr*son now takes it rightful place as an authentic\, unique asset which is inextricably linked the history of the City of Joliet\, and it continues to draw interest from visitors all around the world. \nGET TICKETS AT EVENTBRITE!! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n
