SUMMARY:Perseids in the Preserves
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever seen a shooting star?\nUp your odds during the Perseids meteor shower. This is considered one of the brighter meteor showers of the year. Forked Creek Preserve was selected as the location because of its lowered light pollution. The darker the sky\, the more brilliant the show trust us\, its worth the drive. \nThis year\, peak activity will be in the early morning hours of Aug. 12\, so join us the night before! \nPack a chair\, a blanket and some snacks and head to the preserve at night\, when the gates are usually locked. \nDrop in any time between 8 and 11 p.m. for stargazing. \nTake a break by the fire and roast a marshmallow. If you are interested in viewing the shower all night\, then consider camping at one of the Forest Preserve District of Will County campsite locations. This offers you the chance to be outdoors all night to view meteors when conditions are best. Camping is by reservation only\, and fees apply. Make sure to reserve your spot now to view this annual astronomical event. \n

SUMMARY:Dancing for Our Tribe: Potawatomi Traditions in the New Millennium
DESCRIPTION:Four Rivers is collaborating with the Three Rivers Public Library District for a special temporary exhibit\, “Dancing for Our Tribe.”  From the artist Sharon Hoogstraten: “This legacy Potawatomi portrait collection is for our future seven generations and for the artful education of those who presume Great Lakes Native America to be a vanquished race. Using high resolution photography and image processing technology\, I’ve blended richly detailed regalia with backgrounds of native woodlands or points west where so many of our tribe were forcibly relocated — a visual effect reminiscent of the painted backdrops of the 1900s Indian portraits. In ‘Dancing for Our Tribe\,’ I portray a fresh reality of the descendants: People who live in a world of sewing machines\, synthetic fabrics\, military service\, favorite sports teams\, high-resolution digital cameras and a new millennium. They have merged loss\, optimism and contemporary life by creating a riveting celebration of continued existence — loudly declaring\, ‘WE ARE STILL HERE!’” \n

SUMMARY:Robert Ridgway: When Amateur Bird Watching Became a Rigorous Science
DESCRIPTION:Join Illinois’ most pre-eminent bird man as he recalls the history of the Audubon Society and the evolution of bird watching as it grew from a hobby to a scientific discipline. Hear stories that illuminate our legacies as bird watchers\, namely creating a cadre of community scientists\, encouraging the next generation of conservationists and protecting habitat for future generations of birds. \nBrian “Fox” Ellis becomes Robert Ridgway\, telling the story of his transect of the western wilderness when he was still a teenager; his lifelong work at the Smithsonian Institution; his birding trips into Central America; and his journey across Alaska with John Burroughs\, Louis Agazziz Fuertes\, and John Muir. Ridgway was a student of Spencer Baird\, who traveled with Audubon\, creating a direct link to the lineage of America’s pre-eminent ornithologists. He helped to refine systematics and evolutionary theory\, redefining the relationships between species\, subspecies and geography. \nThis dynamic program is equal parts storytelling and discussion about birds and preserving habitat. Participants are invited to discuss and plan direct actions to improve the ecological health of their community. They will be given tools to become citizen scientists and encouraged to use art as part of their appreciation of birds and Illinois ecology. \nIllinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly through the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, as well as by contributions from individuals\, foundations and corporations. Any views\, findings\, conclusions or recommendations expressed by speakers\, program participants or audiences do not necessarily reflect those of the NEH\, Illinois Humanities\, IACA\, our partnering organizations or our funders. \nRegistration required by Thursday\, July 10: 815-722-9301. Must be 18 or older. \nIsle a la Cache Museum is an accessible facility. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering or submit a request online(Opens in a new window) no later than 48 hours before the program.
