SUMMARY:“Forgottonia\, An Intimate Portrait of Rural Illinois”
DESCRIPTION:The whole family will enjoy this FREE performance at the Lock 16 Visitor Center! The Canal Corridor Association will host an Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau presentation entitled “Forgottonia\, An Intimate Portrait of Rural Illinois” by Chris Vallillo. \nDon’t miss Chris Vallillo as he performs his new one man show\, “Forgottonia\,” featuring music he wrote over the last 35 years about Western Illinois based on his experiences as a folklorist and songwriter in rural Illinois. The show combines music\, storytelling\, and historically accurate narratives in a solo performance. Vallillo has spent the past 35 years documenting and preserving the heritage of Western Illinois: the land lovingly called Forgottonia. \nChris Vallillo is an award-winning rural singer/songwriter\, folk musician and folklorist with a natural affinity for American roots music. A master of bottleneck slide guitar\, he weaves original\, contemporary\, and traditional songs into a compelling and entertaining portrait of the history and lifestyle of the Midwest. In the mid 1980s he was involved in documenting the last of the “pre-radio” generation of rural musicians in Illinois. \n  \nRegister Now \n  \nThis event is being produced by Canal Corridor Association in partnership with Illinois Humanities. The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau invites Illinois authors\, artists\, and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state\, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. \nYou can find more information on Chris Vallillo and his presentation at https://www.ilhumanities.org/chris-vallillo/

SUMMARY:Dinner Lecture: Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an unforgettable evening at the beautiful\, historic Public Landing Restaurant with presenter Jeanne Schultz Angel and her presentation “Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois”.\n\n\n\n\nPrior to 1920\, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local\, state\, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal\, the path to women’s suffrage was infused with sexism and racism and triggered a fear of feminism whose roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the suffrage movement\, they were not the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin\, the first woman to vote in Illinois\, to Ida B. Wells\, a woman who did not let racism stop her voice\, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists in Illinois.\n\n\n \n\n\nCocktails begin at 6:00pm\, followed by a delicious buffet style dinner at 6:30pm. The dinner lecture begins at 7:30pm. \n\n\nHosted by the Canal Corridor Association and The Gaylord Building\, this dinner lecture series provides an opportunity to introduce participants to local and regional history topics during a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Reservations required for all events.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor more information call (815)220-1848×1838

SUMMARY:Book Signing with Author Steven Decker
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the Canal Corridor Association on Saturday December 23rd 11:00am – 1:00pm for a book signing with author Steven Decker and his book Cambridge Street at the Lock 16 Café & Visitor Center\, 754 First Street LaSalle\, IL. \n \n“Cambridge Street is for the millions of immigrants from Italy and the world that came to America to give their families better lives\, they helped build our country\, feed its people and fight its wars. Now\, with the passing of years\, their bravery and sacrifices are being forgotten. We must not let that happen.” – Steven Decker \nThe Mafia\, bad government and high taxes forced the Tomaso family to leave Italy and the people they loved. They came to America in search of opportunity but found rejection and prejudice. Chicago\, sprawling and dirty\, was not like anything they could have dreamed or imagined. The family quickly learned that immigrants – especially Italians and\, worse\, Sicilians – were not wanted or welcomed. Love of family and trust in God held them together and\, somehow\, they survived. The Tomasos were finally content until early one morning when an act of terrible\, unforgivable violence was committed against them by their Italian countrymen. \nAuthor Steven Decker grew up in a large\, thriving Sicilian family on the north side of Chicago. He never forgot the stories about the struggles of his immigrant grandparents: How they survived terrible poverty\, life during Prohibition and their encounters with gangsters. \nFor more information call (815)220-1848.
