After the long winter\, debris and litter descend upon the trail and banks of the canal\, and\, as an advocate for the I&M Canal National Heritage Area\, we organize clean-ups to beautify the surroundings. \nOur annual I&M Canal Spring Clean-Up is held the third week of April around Earth Day. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Canal Corridor Association will host an Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau presentation entitled “Singing Bird and the Importance of Native American Women in Illinois History” by Kim Sigafus. \nDressed in her native regalia\, Kim will be giving a history of the natives in Illinois with a focus on native women\, or what was considered “The Hidden Half.” Her primary focus will be women such as Singing Bird (Blackhawk’s wife)\, and Hononegah. Kim will bring the audience into these women’s day-to-day lives\, including courting\, marriage\, and child-rearing. She will also talk about their role in their husbands’ lives\, and how those lives affected the history of Illinois. \nKim will bring native items that women would have used in their daily lives\, as she discusses the role women played within the family unit. The audience will be able to pick up and view the items\, learn native language and music\, and get the chance to play the drum in this interactive experience. \nKim Sigafus is an award-winning Ojibwa author who writes Native American fiction\, non-fiction\, children’s and young adult books. She has presented on native history\, food\, and music\, and has traveled all over the Midwest in her native regalia\, bringing native culture to life. Kim’s family is from White Earth Reservation\, located in the northwest corner of Minnesota. The Canal Corridor Association is hosting a FREE Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau presentation entitled “Down in the Mine: American Coal Miners and Their Songs\, 1890-1960” by Bucky Halker. \nCoal miners in Illinois and the rest of the US have a long tradition of writing poetry and music related to their occupation. This program brings that tradition to the forefront through the combination of music performance (guitar and vocal) and spoken commentary\, placing this important folk tradition in a broader historical context and offers details on coal mining\, coal-miner bards and songwriters\, early country music\, and individual songs. \nBucky Halker is a songwriter\, performer\, and historian with 15 albums\, including Anywhere But Utah: Songs of Joe Hill (2015)\, a musical tribute to martyred labor songwriter Joe Hill (1879-1915)\, and The Ghost of Woody Guthrie (2012)\, an original music tribute to the legendary folksinger. \n  \nRegister Now \n  \nThis event is being produced by Canal Corridor Association in partnership with Illinois Humanities. The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau invites Illinois authors\, artists\, and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state\, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. The Canal Corridor Association will host an Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau presentation entitled “Forgottonia\, An Intimate Portrait of Rural Illinois” by Chris Vallillo. \nDon’t miss Chris Vallillo as he performs his new one man show\, “Forgottonia\,” featuring music he wrote over the last 35 years about Western Illinois based on his experiences as a folklorist and songwriter in rural Illinois. The show combines music\, storytelling\, and historically accurate narratives in a solo performance. Vallillo has spent the past 35 years documenting and preserving the heritage of Western Illinois: the land lovingly called Forgottonia. \nChris Vallillo is an award-winning rural singer/songwriter\, folk musician and folklorist with a natural affinity for American roots music. A master of bottleneck slide guitar\, he weaves original\, contemporary\, and traditional songs into a compelling and entertaining portrait of the history and lifestyle of the Midwest. In the mid 1980s he was involved in documenting the last of the “pre-radio” generation of rural musicians in Illinois. \n  \nRegister Now \n  \nThis event is being produced by Canal Corridor Association in partnership with Illinois Humanities. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an unforgettable evening at the beautiful\, historic Public Landing Restaurant with presenter Jeanne Schultz Angel and her presentation “Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois”.\n\n\n\n\nPrior to 1920\, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local\, state\, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal\, the path to women’s suffrage was infused with sexism and racism and triggered a fear of feminism whose roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the suffrage movement\, they were not the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin\, the first woman to vote in Illinois\, to Ida B. Wells\, a woman who did not let racism stop her voice\, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists in Illinois.\n\n\n \n\n\nCocktails begin at 6:00pm\, followed by a delicious buffet style dinner at 6:30pm. You will experience the daily lives of those who lived and worked on the canal boats\, as well as the towns through with they traveled. Hop on board with the canalers\, mule boys\, the lock tenders\, and their families\, miners\, quarrymen\, shopkeepers\, and others\, to witness their world of more than 150 years ago.\n  \nAuthor Tom Willcockson obtained a history degree from Carleton College. Willcockson has worked for Chicago’s Newberry Library where he has developed his illustration and cartographic skills. He currently operates Mapcraft Custom cartography.

DESCRIPTION:Join us\, Wednesday November 14th 2018\, at the Gaylord Building for our Dinner Lecture Series: World War II on the Great Lakes! \n \nThe Great Lakes of North America were far from the battlefields of World War II but the factories\, training camps\, and shipyards of the region were crucial to victory over the forces of fascism. This illustrated lecture will tell the story how Chicago and the lakes region were the “Arsenal of Democracy and reflect on the legacy left from that historic era. \nTheodore J. Karamanski\, Ph.D a professor of history at Loyola University Chicago\, where he founded and directs the Public History Program. He is the author of seven books\, including Rally ’Round the Flag: Chicago and the Civil War\, Schooner Passage: Sailing Ships and the Lake Michigan Frontier\, and most recently Blackbird’s Song: Andrew J. Blackbird and the Odawa People. In addition to his work at Loyola\, Ted has served as a heritage consultant to the National Park Service on numerous occasions in Alaska and across the Midwest region as well as National Geographic\, The History Channel\, and the Travel Channel. He was an adviser for the creation of the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor and for the recently proposed St. Croix River National Heritage Area. That long\, winding road\, with its twists and turns\, detours and stops\, led her at age 57 to a contract job in Antarctica with its extreme adventures and quirky residents. Not knowing what could possibly be next in her life-journey experiences\, a suggestion by award-winning author\, Linda Collison\, prompted her to pen those adventures and stories. Jeanne continues to relish life’s treasured moments as she travels to distant lands\, encounters new friends\, and explores other cultures. She is author of the Grandma Goes to…book series\, a Professional Speaker\, Raconteur (storyteller)\, Intentional Living Coach\, Serial entrepreneur\, and Community Volunteer.

DESCRIPTION:The Canal Corridor Association invites you to: \nThe 6th Annual Canal Alliance Congress \nWednesday\, February 21\, 2018\, 8:30am-4:30pm  \nat the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center  \n25055 South Walnut Lane Channahon\, IL 60410 \n\n \nThe annual Canal Alliance Congress is a gathering of local I&M Canal enthusiasts\, city and state officials\, and business and civic organizations who meet to network\, discuss the goings-on in the I&M Canal National Heritage Area\, and coordinate efforts to further promote the IMCNHA. \nThis all-day event is for those working to (1) promote the National Heritage Area (NHA)\, (2) preserve and maintain the cultural resources of the NHA\, (3) collaborate in the fields of conservation\, economic development\, recreation\, preservation\, storytelling\, education\, interpretation\, education and sustainability in the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area. \nPresentations focus around building partnerships to engage with people throughout the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area.  Networking opportunities at the Canal Alliance Congress allow representatives from neighboring towns to share updates and plans. \n\nThis year’s Congress will focus on Illinois Bicentennial and present opportunities for partnership programs and activities.
