DESCRIPTION:Museum news briefThis years Veterans Day exhibit is now up at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum at 1100 Canal St. in Ottawa. The museum is open Thursday through Monday from 10am to 4pm. We are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.The display showcases book 5 of 7 from Rena Monterastellis collection of World War II scrapbooks. Her dates for book 5 are from February 14\, 1943 to June 7\, 1944; and we have these articles and photos in alphabetical order. If you had a local relative in the war during these dates\, come in to see if he or she is highlighted in book 5.Then\, our cubicle is chocked full of memorabilia from most all of the wars that the United Sates participated in. There are food brands that are still available since the Civil War. We have uniforms and medals from various enlistments. There is a one-of-a-kind address book from a Japanese POW camp made by Pete Thomson\, who survived and came home to visit many of his fellow POWs. We have a bayonet captured on Guadalcanal; also a rare 3-flap Vietnam era hand-grenade pouch.This years displays went up early because they have to come down in mid-December to make room for our next exhibit. In January and February of 2027\, we are getting a professional Looking for Lincoln exhibit from Springfield which will highlight the Underground Railroad in Illinois. Three lectures during those two months will also be centered on the Underground Railroad. Please come in and visit our museumits a happening place. As folk singer Chris Vallillo has said\, If history happened in Illinois\, it probably happened in Ottawa.\n

SUMMARY:Veterans' Guard 24-Hour Vigil
DESCRIPTION:The 18th Annual 24-Hour Veterans Honor Guard Vigil will be held at the War Memorial in Washington Square\, downtown Ottawa. The opening ceremony will be on Friday\, November 6th at 4:45 pm\, when area Submarine Veterans will be the Lead Honor Guard. A brief closing ceremony will begin at 5 pm on Saturday\, November 7th.A combined area Color Guard will Place the Colors\, followed by brief remarks\, then place the Lead Honor Guard. The closing ceremonies will be at 5 pm Saturday with the Rifle Salute\, TAPS\, and Retirement of the Colors. Boy Scout Troop 745 will assist.Military vehicles will be on display. The Tunes of Glory Bagpipers will play appropriate music on Saturday\, 3 to 5 pm. The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) will have a Field Day Exercise\, where all interested can learn new skills. Flutes for vets will also demonstrate throughout the event. New this year\, is a Legion vs VFW Bags Tournament on Saturday.The Legion is seeking Veteran volunteers for this event. There will be tents for the command post (thanks to Illinois Valley Labor Management)\, shifts are 15 minutes. Food & coffee will be available. Chaperones to help assist vets from area nursing homes are also encouraged. Family members/fellow patriots may stand duty with each veterans shift. Wear weather/military appropriate clothing. Uniforms are welcome\, POW/MIA sweatshirts or Branch of Service caps are acceptable as well. Extra garrison caps will be available if needed. A Stand-by team is also needed.This event precedes the Ottawa Memorial Associations Veterans Day Ceremony at 10:15 am in the same location\, on November 11th.\n

During this Living History Encounter\, experience history in action with live demonstrations\, including a blacksmith transforming raw metal into everyday tools. See demonstrations of various weapons by Alexander Hamiltons New York Provincial Company of Artillery and meet voyageurs and settlers who journeyed to this land and made it their home. This is a drop-in program; come anytime between noon and 3 p.m. Admission is free.\n
