DESCRIPTION:Visit beautiful City–County Park in Princeton\, IL\, as Shadows of the Blue and Gray proudly presents our 30th year of family-friendly Civil War Living History.  Stroll through the camps and talk with our knowledgeable reenactors about daily camp life during the Civil War. All reenactors are eager to share their experiences and answer questions. Children can also participate in a scavenger hunt and earn a prize upon completion.  \nA narrated mock battle will be presented both Saturday and Sunday\, featuring Infantry\, Cavalry\, and Artillery demonstrations. Throughout the day\, visitors may also encounter pop-up skirmishes across the grounds. Plan to arrive early and stay for the day. Food options will be available on site\, or you are welcome to bring your own and relax in our dining area.  Be sure to visit our Civilian Reenactors as they bring 1860s life to the present and share what daily life was like during the Civil War era\nThis event is open to the public for a nominal fee of $5 per person. SUMMARY:Third Friday Lecture - Causing a Stir: The First Chicago River Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Since the convening of the 2025 Chicago River Swim\, there has been much discussion about the necessity and the fallacy of swimming in the Chicago River.  Yet\, what did the very first swim marathon look like in 1907?  It was nothing short of a much-ridiculed\, much-attended\, international contest that broke hearts and gender barriers.  \n\nChicago Maritime Museum Associate Joe Gamble will discuss the long road to organizing the first marathon\, the drama that unfolded\, and the lasting effects it had on Chicago and cities across the nation.  The October 16  presentation is $5 for members and $10 for non-members\, and includes Bites & Beverages\, the museum’s volunteer-operated hospitality service\, which begins at 6:30. Seating is limited\, so reserve your place today. Virtual seats are also available with a live connection to the Q&A that follows.\nThis lecture is held in conjunction with Bridgeport Art Center’s Third Friday Open Studios. DESCRIPTION:This training is a professional learning opportunity presented by the Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy and hosted by the Forest Preserve District of Will County. This daylong professional development training is designed to support teachers and non-formal educators across all academic disciplines and settings to gain a foundational grounding in the histories and contemporary experiences of Native Peoples with the goal of supporting the implementation of the Native American History teaching mandate in Illinois. Educators will gain foundational knowledge and understanding of Native American history\, cultures\, perspectives and the importance of Tribal Sovereignty and its many expressions and manifestations. After examining Indigenous absence within the schooling system\, participants will utilize resources and pedagogical shifts to incorporate First Voice perspectives in their classrooms. Educators can earn 6 CEUs for completing the professional development. A catered lunch will be sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County.
