DESCRIPTION:Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad Near Lake Michigan\nIn the decades before the Civil War\, more than 4500 enslaved people escaping from the South traveled across Illinois\, with many coming to and through the Chicago region.  With maps and images\, historian and author Larry McClellan\, will explore their stories — particularly those of people who left Chicago via Lake Michigan. \n\n\n\nLarry is the author of Onward to Chicago: Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad in Northeastern Illinois [2023]. The book received the national 2023 Memorial Prize for the Advancement of Knowledge from the Underground Railroad Free Press. In 2022 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois State Historical Society for his contributions to Illinois history\, and in 2024\, he served on the Illinois Underground Railroad Task Force reporting to the state legislature. \n\nMembers:            $5.00 \nNon-Members:  $10.00

SUMMARY:The Great Race - Lunch Stop Pontiac
DESCRIPTION:The Great Race 2025 is coming to Pontiac!\nOn Monday\, June 23rd\, a hosted lunch stop will be held in Downtown Pontiac for the famous vintage car rally. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for racers to allow kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look. \nCars will enter Pontiac at 1PM and exit at 4PM and is completely free to enter! \nThe 2025 Great Race will begin on Saturday\, June 21 in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, surrounded by a crowd of thousands at the MSRA Back to the 50s Weekend car show at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. \nNine days later\, on Sunday\, June 29\, the race will finish in Irmo\, South Carolina\, near Lake Murray.
