President Penny Chamberlain will conduct a brief business meeting regarding current preservation efforts and the organization’s plans for the future. The afternoon will conclude with attendees sharing memories of how they first discovered Thorn Creek Woods and how they came to be a member of Friends. The event is open to the public and will be held at Park Forest Village Hall\, 350 Victory Drive. It is sponsored by the Jim Marzuki Memorial Fund\, established by Friends of Thorn Creek Woods to enhance public programming. Refreshments will be served. Fee: Free! Age: Ages 12 or older. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Joliet City Center Partnership (CCP) is excited to host the\n3rd annual Stone & Steel Spooky 5K\non\nSunday\, October 6th\, 2024 at 8 a.m.\nThis chip-timed race starts in Downtown Joliet and runs through the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site. Walkers and runners are welcome to participate. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costume. A hat is included in the race fee\, but may not be guaranteed if registering after September 24th. Registration will remain open the morning of the race beginning at 7 a.m. \nAwards will be presented to the male and female with the best overall time and by age group (0-10\, 11-14\, 15-19\, 20-29\, 30-39\, 40-49\, 50-59\, 60 +). 1st\, 2nd and 3rd Place overall Female and Male will receive special awards. Must be present to receive award. Awards will not be mailed. \nHalf of the proceeds will be donated to Joliet Central High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society which recognizes students who excel in the four pillars of NHS: leadership\, scholarship\, service\, and character. All NHS students have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Selected members participate in a variety of service projects and leadership events. \n

This independent program is for guests with sensory-processing needs\, social anxiety\, post-traumatic stress disorder and those who would benefit from a small-group experience. \nBuddy bags with sensory gadgets and a limited supply of noise-canceling headphones will be available for visitor use. Seven handheld audio units providing a narrative of the All-Persons Trail will be available for checkout at the front desk for guests who have visual impairments or who need cognitive support. \nFee: Free! Age: All ages. Registration required by Saturday\, Oct. 5\, by calling 815-722-9470 or online. \nThe center will be open only to registered participants during this time\, so please register everyone in your group. \nThis is an inclusive program\, welcoming individuals of all abilities. Accommodations will be made where possible. Staff will be on hand to help visitors learn about our local habitat through interactive exhibits\, activities and/or crafts.
