SUMMARY:Myth Busting in the Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Area - Second Sunday Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Myth Busting in the Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Area – Second Sunday Lecture Series\nHave you ever heard conflicting stories about how long the I&M Canal was in business and what its impact was? Did anyone die digging the canal and did they really get paid in whiskey? Was the canal replaced by the railroad or larger waterways? Was it Father Marquette or Louis Joliett who suggested a canal in 1673\, what was their reference? Were the state boundaries moved because of the canal? The Canal Corridor Association has spent years reading primary sources to answer these questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAna B. Koval\, President\, of the Canal Corridor Association\, has been working for CCA for 27 years and is responsible for bringing The Volunteer\, the only boat on the I&M for the last 75 years\, to its western terminus in LaSalle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Civil War Re-enactment Event
DESCRIPTION:After spending time looking at the condition of the wall surrounding the Wallace-Dickey Cemetery on the north\nbluff in Ottawa\, both Chuck Sanders\, president of the Wallace-Dickey Cemetery Preservation Association\, and\nKeith Stehl\, Ottawa Masonry\, acknowledge it going to be a large and expensive undertaking. “We want to re-use\nas much of the original Joliet limestone as possible”\, stated Sanders.\nA dedicated group of volunteers\, mostly members of the Starved Rock Civil War Round Table\, started some\nrestoration work in 2019\, but\, the work was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This same group has handled\nthe mundane maintenance chores such as mowing the grass and collecting fallen branches for several years.\nCreated in 2021 with a goal to restore and preserve this private\, land-locked cemetery\, the Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association has begun a major fundraising effort with the goal to stabilize the existing wall\nand re-build as necessary. As a first step\, two trees will be removed\, thanks to a generous donation from a\nbenefactor.\nAs part of their fundraising efforts\, the Association is planning a Civil War re-enactment event on the grounds of\nthe Reddick Mansion on Saturday\, May 18th . Events on Sunday\, May 19th\, will include guided tours of the\ncemetery and a presentation about General Wallace at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum.\nThe cemetery dates back to early 1800s and holds the graves of several members of the Wallace and Dickey\nfamilies\, including General WHL Wallace killed in the Battle of Shiloh (and immortalized in the mural above\nJeremiah Joe’s in downtown Ottawa)\, T. Lyle Dickey\, prominent attorney of the mid 19th century\, their wives and\nchildren.\nPeople interested in helping preserve this unique part of Ottawa’s history can send donations to “Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association NFP”\, PO Box 392\, Ottawa\, Il 61350. Volunteers are also needed\, both for\nhelping at the fundraising event and for the construction/maintenance of the cemetery. People wanting more\ninformation or to volunteer can reach via the Association via e-mail at gen_wallace@outlook.com. \n  \n
