The Joliet Pr*son\, with its iconic castellated gothic architecture was designed by Chicago earliest architect W.W. Boyington\, who also designed the Chicago Water Tower. The use of Joliet limestone was a trademark of Boyington’s designs and this locally quarried stone was used to erect structures all around the country. The Pr*son in Joliet replaced the first state penitentiary in Alton\, built on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in 1831. The privately-managed Pr*son quickly degraded into a state of horrendous conditions. Noted reformer Dorothea Dix personally petitioned the Illinois General Assembly to construct a new penitentiary after inspection the Alton Pr*son in 1847. \nWhile action from the State legislature and some construction occurred in prior years\, May 22\, 1858 marks the “beginning” of the Joliet Pr*son when fifty-three inmates arrived at a small structure\, which still stands\, to begin the work of constructing the larger Pr*son around themselves. This included the quarrying of the limestone from two adjacent quarries. \nUpon its opening\, the Chicago Tribune declared glowingly\, “We came away fully impressed with the belief that the important trusts at Joliet are in good hands\, that there is growing a State work which will be for long years to come the pride of her citizens.” The image of the Joliet Pr*son\, however\, quickly changed. By 1878\, the Pr*son was filled well over capacity with nearly 2\,000 inmates. Reports of unsanitary and dangerous conditions emerged and by 1905\, calls for the closure of the “old Pr*son” were made. The 1926 construction of Stateville Penitentiary in what is now Crest Hill was intended to close the Pr*son\, but it continued to house offenders until 2002\, when it was finally closed by Governor George Ryan as a budgetary measure. \nThe Pr*son is probably best known today for its most popular\, albeit fictional inmate – “Joliet Jake” Blues from the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Since then\, the Pr*son has made a number of appearances in films in television\, including as the character of “Fox River State Penitentiary” in the critically acclaimed Fox series “Pr*son Break\,” and in smaller scenes in Derailed\, Let’s Go to Pr*son\, and recently\, Empire. \nSadly\, despite this interest from Hollywood\, the Pr*son remained closed\, and in addition to damage from the elements\, was subject to rampant vandalism\, including several acts of arson. Attempts were made to find suitable options for reuse\, including tourism\, by the Collins Street Task Force of concerned public and private leaders\, but these efforts were stalled by the Great Recession of 2008. Continued vandalism and destruction of the site led Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk to personally petition the state government to allow the City of Joliet to take control of the property in December of 2017. Since then\, the City looked to the Joliet Area Historical Museum to take a leadership role in operating tours at the site. In partnership with the City\, the Museum identified a number of community partners to form a public/private partnership entity\, The Old Joliet Pr*son Preservation Coalition. To date\, the project has been met with an enthusiastic response from the community of Joliet\, culminating in over 6\,500 volunteer hours\, one million dollars in in-kind labor and donations\, and nearly $200\,000 in funds raised to benefit the site. \nTrue to its historic legacy\, the Old Joliet Pr*son now takes it rightful place as an authentic\, unique asset which is inextricably linked the history of the City of Joliet\, and it continues to draw interest from visitors all around the world. \nGET TICKETS AT EVENTBRITE!! \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:The Life of Mother Theresa Dudzik
DESCRIPTION:  \nAuthor Patricia Camalliere and Sister Jeanne Marie of The Franciscan Convent in Lemont will be speaking about the life of Mother Theresa Dudzik.\n\nIn 1881\, Chicago welcomed a young woman\, Josephine Dudzik\, and her family who had emigrated from Poland. They settled in the vicinity of the well-known St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on the city’s vibrant northwest side. \nA generous\, compassionate\, and devout woman\, Josephine was moved by the condition of the aged\, poor\, abandoned\, and orphaned whom she encountered in her neighborhood. She came to their aid spiritually\, physically\, and emotionally\, even sheltering some in her own family home. During Chicago’s severe financial crisis of 1893\, which resulted in greater economic stress and unemployment\, Josephine upon the advice of her pastor formed a religious community to help her aid the elderly and those in need. Thus\, on December 8\, 1894 the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago was born\, and Josephine Dudzik was called Sister Mary Theresa. Sister Mary Theresa received the honorary title of ‘Mother’ in 1948 twenty-two years after her death. \n\n\nFor more than 127 years\, imbued with the spirit of Mother Mary Theresa\, the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago have responded to the needs of God’s people and have served in various ministries\, the care of the elderly and the sick in hospitals and nursing homes: providing housing and services for residents in independent\, assisted living\, and skilled nursing facilities; the operation of child care centers; teaching in elementary and secondary schools and universities; pastoral care; social service work; and sheltering victims of domestic violence. \nMother Mary Theresa died in Chicago on September 20\, 1918. Because of the heroic virtues evident in her life\, she is now a candidate for sainthood. Her remains\, brought to the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago in Lemont from St. Adalbert Cemetery in 1972\, were sealed in a granite sarcophagus in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. The cause for her beatification and canonization is actively being pursued. We pray that Venerable Mother Mary Theresa will be recognized as a saint in the Catholic Church and serve as a model for all Christians. \n\n

SUMMARY:Freedom Seekers & the Underground Railroad in Chicago & Northeast Illinois
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Maritime Museum Third Friday lecture series on October 20th\, presents a discussion on the development of the Underground Railroad.\nIn the decades before the Civil War\, several thousand freedom seekers travelled through Northeastern Illinois. This program outlines their stories and the range of encounters with white and Black abolitionists\, who provided assistance. \nDr. Larry McClellan has written extensively on the Underground Railroad in Illinois and northwest Indiana. He was the principal author of applications that added sites in Crete\, Lockport and on the Little Calumet River to the National Park Service registry of significant Underground Railroad sites in America. \nIn 1970\, Dr. McClellan helped to start Governors State University and taught there for many years. He is now Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Community Studies at GSU. In the late 1970s\, he was Mayor of Park Forest South\, now University Park\, Illinois. From 1993 through 2003\, he wrote a monthly regional history column for The Star newspapers in the suburbs south of Chicago. \nIn conjunction with the Bridgeport Art Center’s Third Friday Open House\, the Chicago Maritime Museum opens its doors for lively presentations on maritime history and current events each month. Come early and explore the Bridgeport Art Center’s many art galleries. Join us on Friday\, August 18 at 7:00 p.m. either in person or on Zoom. \nThe presentation is $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members. However\, you might just consider joining the CMM for an annual membership of just $35\, which provides unlimited visits\, access to our monthly newsletter and special events such as the Third Friday maritime lecture series.
