SUMMARY:Think & Drink: Saving Lockport's Central Square
DESCRIPTION:Our next Think & Drink brings us a story at the very heart of Lockport’s history. \nIn the 1970s\, the Old Central School building\, a Lockport landmark since its construction in 1896\, was threatened with demolition. A determined group of citizens\, business leaders\, and preservationists\, including a young Jerry Adelmann\, stepped in to save it. Their victory not only preserved the building as Central Square\, home to city offices and community gatherings\, but also launched Lockport’s modern preservation movement. \nAdelmann will share this pivotal story\, complete with courtroom battles\, citizen action\, and the vision that shaped Lockport’s future. It’s a rare chance to hear from one of the leaders who helped make preservation a cornerstone of our community. \nGerald “Jerry” Adelmann is a sixth-generation Lockport resident whose lifelong commitment to preservation and conservation has shaped both his hometown and the region. He played a key role in saving Lockport’s Central Square\, restoring the Gaylord Building\, and creating the I&M Canal Nation Heritage Area\, the nation’s first National Heritage Area. From 1988–2023\, he led Openlands\, advancing landmark conservation projects across northeastern Illinois. \nRegistration is not required but appreciated to gauge attendance: https://savingcentralsquare.eventbrite.com. Bonus! Enjoy a Public Landing discount when you register!

SUMMARY:I & M Canal Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:Picture it: 1848 Illinois. Prairie covers the state. Overland transportation is slow and treacherous. And only a few small communities exist\, including a small port town on Lake Michigan called Chicago. Then the I&M Canal opens\, and everything changes. Relive the fateful turning point in our history that led to a new era of transportation and the growth of our region by taking a trip on The Volunteer\, our Canal Boat. This vessel is not only a replica of those from the 1840s. It also runs on the same energy source: mule power! Your journey includes: a Mule Tending 101 class in which you’ll meet one of our mules\, interact with crew of period dressed guides\, hear tales of the canals heyday and enjoy a 60-90 minute boat ride. Catch the boat at I&M Canal State Trail Lock 14 Access\, LaSalle IL. Its near our I&M Canal Visitor Center and Lock 16 Gift Shop and Cafe\, which is located at 754 First Street\, so pop in if you have questions\, want to buy tickets in person\, need to use the restrooms before you embark or are looking for a breakfast\, lunch\, snack or beverage.
