SUMMARY:I&M Canal Boat Kid
DESCRIPTION:New for this year\, we’re dedicating the 11:30 am ride each day to providing a fun adventure for our younger passengers aged 5-12.\nPurchase tickets for the 11:30 am I&M Canal Boat Ride\, and children and their guardians will discover what it would have been like to be a kid in the 1840s\, the era of our canal boat (though please click “Book Your Trip” and check schedule as times can vary). \nBook Your Trip > \nAs a Canal Boat Kid\, they may be asked to take on kid-appropriate deckhand chores\, discover how to care for mules\, find out what the captain’s job included\, greet other passengers when they board\, look for wildlife along the shores\, and more all while they explore the boat during its tour. \nThis is a kid-friendly tour\, not a kids-only tour. Adult passengers will enjoy hearing about life on and around the canal from our on-board tour guide as the boat makes its way up the canal. \nThis unique\, young-passenger-focused experience gets your kids out of the house (and off their devices) so they can engage with nature and the stories of our community\, state and nation\, making a lasting impression for all.

SUMMARY:Nellie Becker - A Titanic Story and Part of the 1912 Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Titanic sank in the frigid Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14-15\, 1912.\nThe tragic loss of over 1\,400 lives that night\, the failures of the great unsinkable ocean liner\, the insufficient lifeboats\, all would affect legislation of ship building and sea travel in the months and years to come. \nOver 700 survivors would return home and try to pick up the pieces. Many would suffer from the reverberations of that night for the rest of their lives\, with some experiencing alcoholism\, depression\, post traumatic stress\, even suicide. \nWith such an enormous tragedy playing a central role upon the world’s stage\, what was happening here\, in Bureau County? We’ll take a look at the photographs and stories that the lives of residents here revolved around. Newspaper stories will run the gamut from the ordinary: bids for the building of Matson Public Library were discussed and the architect’s proposal for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument were accepted ahead of its projected summer 1912 build; to the criminal: three masked highwaymen rob the train in Sheffield stealing $800 in cash and a diamond ring; to the scandalous: the front-page coverage of the divorce of the heroic doctor of the Cherry Mine disaster after his wife alleged she was the victim of domestic violence. \nFrom the sad\, to the humorous\, to the fashions and the politics\, we hope the exhibit gives you a better understanding of what life was like here in 1912. We hope you’ll join us in March for the exhibit and all the events we have planned for you! \nMuseum is opened Wednesday through Saturday\, noon to 5 pm. Self guided tours on Saturday at 2 pm and 4 pm. \n

SUMMARY:Ottawa's Role in the Biggest Train Heist in American History - Sunday Afternoon Ottawa History
DESCRIPTION:On June 12\, 1924 around 9:00 p.m. two bandits climbed over the engine tender of R.P.O. train 57\, 30 miles outside Chicago. The two men covered the engineer and firemen at gun forcing them to stop the train near Rondout\, Illinois. \nFour other bandits were a Rondout\, staked out in black Cadillacs. As the train approached\, the four rushed and forced 12 workers out of the train. They proceeded to threaten the workers with gasses and weapons\, while securely armed with masks and explosives. Together\, the six bandits emptied the mail car of all 52 pouches containing over $2\,000\,000 in goods. \nDuring the attack\, one fatal mistake was made. The engineer had stopped the train too far past the designated spot; one of the bandits left his post\, and was shot five times by one of his own. The man survived\, but was badly wounded. This near fatal mistake would eventually lead Inspectors to those responsible.\nPresented by Chuck Stanley. $10 per person. ($9 for Museum Members). \n

SUMMARY:Passion & Pride: People of the Pullman Strike
DESCRIPTION:On May 11th\, 1894\, nearly 4\,000 Pullman employees walked off the job. \nAnd it began one of the biggest events in American labor history. In honor of the 130th anniversary of the Strike of 1894\, Historic Pullman Foundation introduces a unique look at that important moment from the perspective of the actual people who lived and worked in Pullman. The exhibit explores the human cost of the strike\, and tries to view the struggle from all sides. \nStep back in time and experience the hardships Pullman families endured. Learn how the press and politicians of the day stirred up passions. And how pride got in the way of progress. \nUltimately\, the Pullman Strike galvanized the labor movement. And started the long road to a better world for American workers. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Historic Pullman Labor History Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore hallowed ground for the modern labor movement\nThe name Pullman was synonymous with luxury. And just as he expected high quality in his products and their operation\, George Pullman’s model town was an attempt to carry that same standard to his factory and workforce. Beautiful and well-built homes\, a school\, a church\, a library\, and a marketplace all reflected George Pullman’s ideals of orderliness\, cleanliness\, and luxuriousness. However\, one critical element was missing – democracy. \nThe town and factory were ruled by the company and its officers. When workers rose up for a voice in 1894\, a national railroad shut-down resulted. And Pullman’s reputation suffered as he continued to oppose his workforce. \nCo-sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society and the Historic Pullman Foundation\, this tour explores the relationships between George Pullman\, his company town\, and the men and women who worked at his factory. \nJoin us for a tour that reflects many of the contemporary issues we face today. After all\, Pullman is where America’s stories live. \nTickets available at Eventbrite.com \n$15 advance / $20 at the door / $10 seniors and students \n
