This same group has handled\nthe mundane maintenance chores such as mowing the grass and collecting fallen branches for several years.\nCreated in 2021 with a goal to restore and preserve this private\, land-locked cemetery\, the Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association has begun a major fundraising effort with the goal to stabilize the existing wall\nand re-build as necessary. As a first step\, two trees will be removed\, thanks to a generous donation from a\nbenefactor.\nAs part of their fundraising efforts\, the Association is planning a Civil War re-enactment event on the grounds of\nthe Reddick Mansion on Saturday\, May 18th . Events on Sunday\, May 19th\, will include guided tours of the\ncemetery and a presentation about General Wallace at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum.\nThe cemetery dates back to early 1800s and holds the graves of several members of the Wallace and Dickey\nfamilies\, including General WHL Wallace killed in the Battle of Shiloh (and immortalized in the mural above\nJeremiah Joe’s in downtown Ottawa)\, T. Lyle Dickey\, prominent attorney of the mid 19th century\, their wives and\nchildren.\nPeople interested in helping preserve this unique part of Ottawa’s history can send donations to “Wallace-Dickey\nCemetery Preservation Association NFP”\, PO Box 392\, Ottawa\, Il 61350. Volunteers are also needed\, both for\nhelping at the fundraising event and for the construction/maintenance of the cemetery. People wanting more\ninformation or to volunteer can reach via the Association via e-mail at gen_wallace@outlook.com. \n

SUMMARY:Nellie Becker - A Titanic Story and Part of the 1912 Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Titanic sank in the frigid Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14-15\, 1912.\nThe tragic loss of over 1\,400 lives that night\, the failures of the great unsinkable ocean liner\, the insufficient lifeboats\, all would affect legislation of ship building and sea travel in the months and years to come. \nOver 700 survivors would return home and try to pick up the pieces. Many would suffer from the reverberations of that night for the rest of their lives\, with some experiencing alcoholism\, depression\, post traumatic stress\, even suicide. \nWith such an enormous tragedy playing a central role upon the world’s stage\, what was happening here\, in Bureau County? We’ll take a look at the photographs and stories that the lives of residents here revolved around. Newspaper stories will run the gamut from the ordinary: bids for the building of Matson Public Library were discussed and the architect’s proposal for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument were accepted ahead of its projected summer 1912 build; to the criminal: three masked highwaymen rob the train in Sheffield stealing $800 in cash and a diamond ring; to the scandalous: the front-page coverage of the divorce of the heroic doctor of the Cherry Mine disaster after his wife alleged she was the victim of domestic violence. \nFrom the sad\, to the humorous\, to the fashions and the politics\, we hope the exhibit gives you a better understanding of what life was like here in 1912. We hope you’ll join us in March for the exhibit and all the events we have planned for you! \nMuseum is opened Wednesday through Saturday\, noon to 5 pm. Self guided tours on Saturday at 2 pm and 4 pm. \n
