SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Now on display in the Gaylord Building’s first-floor gallery\n through July 14th! \n\nAfrican Americans called the Joliet region home before its incorporation in 1852. They have built up the community\, found jobs\, and enjoyed life in the Des Plaines River Valley.\n\nIn spite of this long history\, the Black community has often been on the periphery of historical narratives.  As a way to increase the scope of history\, this exhibit highlights four African American organizations that contribute to the region’s diversity.\n\nThe scope of this grant-funded initiative included a traveling banner exhibit and public programs. These banners are currently on display in the Gaylord Building’s first-floor gallery.\n\nThey can also be viewed online at the Lewis University History Center.\n\nThe Lewis University History Center partnered with Second Baptist Church\, Mount Zion Baptist Church\, The National Hook-up of Black Women Joliet Inc.\, and Warren-Sharpe Community Center on this project\, which focused on regional historical collections and allowed them to broaden their scope and facilitate the stories of historically marginalized peoples. In turn\, this served to broaden the scope of the collection of the Adelmann Regional History Collection (ARHC) at Lewis University.\n

SUMMARY:Girl Named Tom at the Rialto Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Small-town sibling trio Girl Named Tom seeks to create harmony in a world divided. With their distinctive harmonies and heartfelt performances\, Bekah\, Joshua and Caleb Liechty won the hearts of America while becoming the only group to ever win NBC’s “The Voice.” \nIn addition to their chart-topping covers (“River\,” “The Chain\,” & “Dust in the Wind” among others)\, GNT writes original music that will almost certainly project them to becoming the best-known harmony trio of their generation. \nWith their debut EP\, “Another World\,” Girl Named Tom sweeps the listener into reflective space\, exploring fond memories\, global issues\, and intimate conversations. Audiences have been “…blown away by the musicality and harmonies\, creativity\, honesty\, beauty. This sibling trio is stardust.” Crazy World exhibits “crystal clear lead vocals\, driving (and unique) percussion\, and after 3 minutes build up an amazing section of their 3 voices intermeshing together.” \nBased in the Midwest\, Girl Named Tom performed all over the country during the band’s first year before the pandemic struck. Now\, after winning The Voice\, they signed a recording contract with Republic Records and have been on the road playing over 100 shows last year. They finished out 2022 opening for Pentatonix on the A Christmas Spectacular Tour. \nGet tickets here > \n
