SUMMARY:Think & Drink: Saving Lockport's Central Square
DESCRIPTION:Our next Think & Drink brings us a story at the very heart of Lockport’s history. \nIn the 1970s\, the Old Central School building\, a Lockport landmark since its construction in 1896\, was threatened with demolition. A determined group of citizens\, business leaders\, and preservationists\, including a young Jerry Adelmann\, stepped in to save it. Their victory not only preserved the building as Central Square\, home to city offices and community gatherings\, but also launched Lockport’s modern preservation movement. \nAdelmann will share this pivotal story\, complete with courtroom battles\, citizen action\, and the vision that shaped Lockport’s future. It’s a rare chance to hear from one of the leaders who helped make preservation a cornerstone of our community. \nGerald “Jerry” Adelmann is a sixth-generation Lockport resident whose lifelong commitment to preservation and conservation has shaped both his hometown and the region. He played a key role in saving Lockport’s Central Square\, restoring the Gaylord Building\, and creating the I&M Canal Nation Heritage Area\, the nation’s first National Heritage Area. From 1988–2023\, he led Openlands\, advancing landmark conservation projects across northeastern Illinois. \nRegistration is not required but appreciated to gauge attendance: https://savingcentralsquare.eventbrite.com. Bonus! Enjoy a Public Landing discount when you register!

SUMMARY:Third Friday Presets: Dick Lohan on Maritime Architecture
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the last two months of CMM’s current temporary exhibition\, Maritime Midwest Modern\, renowned architect Dirk Lohan will be sharing his thoughts on the interplay between architecture and the waterways in Chicago and his own career. As CMM’s chairman\, Dirk designed the museum’s interior space\, which has received much acclaim from local and national media. \n\n\n\nLohan has long held the belief that successful architecture must respond not only to economic restraints but also to the larger social and physical conditions. As lead architect for the Shedd Oceanarium and Adler Planetarium Sky Pavilion\, Lohan keenly understands the sublime connection between waterways and architectural design. \nLohan left his native Germany to begin his architectural studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology under the tutelage of his grandfather\, Mies van der Rohe. He returned to Germany and finished his studies at the Technische Universität (Dipl. Ing.) in Munich in 1962. In the same year\, he immigrated to the United States and worked closely with Mies on such projects as the New National Gallery in Berlin\, the IBM office building in Chicago\, and Toronto Dominion Centre. \nIn addition to the Shedd and the Adler\, Lohan led architectural design for McDonald’s Headquarters Campus\, the new Soldier Field Football stadium\, and many cultural and commercial national and international building projects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
