SUMMARY:I&M Canal Boat Kid
DESCRIPTION:New for this year\, we’re dedicating the 11:30 am ride each day to providing a fun adventure for our younger passengers aged 5-12.\nPurchase tickets for the 11:30 am I&M Canal Boat Ride\, and children and their guardians will discover what it would have been like to be a kid in the 1840s\, the era of our canal boat (though please click “Book Your Trip” and check schedule as times can vary). \nBook Your Trip > \nAs a Canal Boat Kid\, they may be asked to take on kid-appropriate deckhand chores\, discover how to care for mules\, find out what the captain’s job included\, greet other passengers when they board\, look for wildlife along the shores\, and more all while they explore the boat during its tour. \nThis is a kid-friendly tour\, not a kids-only tour. Adult passengers will enjoy hearing about life on and around the canal from our on-board tour guide as the boat makes its way up the canal. \nThis unique\, young-passenger-focused experience gets your kids out of the house (and off their devices) so they can engage with nature and the stories of our community\, state and nation\, making a lasting impression for all.

SUMMARY:Nellie Becker - A Titanic Story and Part of the 1912 Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Titanic sank in the frigid Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14-15\, 1912.\nThe tragic loss of over 1\,400 lives that night\, the failures of the great unsinkable ocean liner\, the insufficient lifeboats\, all would affect legislation of ship building and sea travel in the months and years to come. \nOver 700 survivors would return home and try to pick up the pieces. Many would suffer from the reverberations of that night for the rest of their lives\, with some experiencing alcoholism\, depression\, post traumatic stress\, even suicide. \nWith such an enormous tragedy playing a central role upon the world’s stage\, what was happening here\, in Bureau County? We’ll take a look at the photographs and stories that the lives of residents here revolved around. Newspaper stories will run the gamut from the ordinary: bids for the building of Matson Public Library were discussed and the architect’s proposal for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument were accepted ahead of its projected summer 1912 build; to the criminal: three masked highwaymen rob the train in Sheffield stealing $800 in cash and a diamond ring; to the scandalous: the front-page coverage of the divorce of the heroic doctor of the Cherry Mine disaster after his wife alleged she was the victim of domestic violence. \nFrom the sad\, to the humorous\, to the fashions and the politics\, we hope the exhibit gives you a better understanding of what life was like here in 1912. We hope you’ll join us in March for the exhibit and all the events we have planned for you! \nMuseum is opened Wednesday through Saturday\, noon to 5 pm. Self guided tours on Saturday at 2 pm and 4 pm. \n

SUMMARY:A River thru History - School Day
DESCRIPTION:A River Thru History – The Des Plaines Valley Rendezvous is a “living history” re-enactment of an event that would have occurred along the Des Plaines River prior to 1848.  The Rendezvous participants are in historically accurate clothing and shelters.  We expect to have over ninety encampments and demonstrators.  The students\, parents and teachers will be immersed in a rich discussion of history\, social customs\, and the skills and items that were necessary to survive on the frontier.  The time period we encompass with the Rendezvous is from the period of early exploration\, through the fur-trade era\, to the early colonization of our area\, approximately 1660 to 1848.  This material is appropriate for most 4th\, 5th and 6th grade classes studying American and local history.  Our capacity is limited so participation in “Student Day” is by invitation only.  We continue to direct our focus toward making this a truly educational event. \nAll students attending our School Day are free\, including chaperones and teachers. We are proud to offer such a rich educational experience at no cost to area schools. Our Rendezvous is run by a non-profit organization and committee of volunteers; a suggested donation of $3 per person would be greatly appreciated from those who are able. \nEach student will be given one free “student” pass so that they may return with their families on Saturday or Sunday when the Rendezvous is open to the general public. \nIf you have questions\, please call Mark Bosse at 708-243-8956.
