SUMMARY:I&M Canal Boat Kid
DESCRIPTION:New for this year\, we’re dedicating the 11:30 am ride each day to providing a fun adventure for our younger passengers aged 5-12.\nPurchase tickets for the 11:30 am I&M Canal Boat Ride\, and children and their guardians will discover what it would have been like to be a kid in the 1840s\, the era of our canal boat (though please click “Book Your Trip” and check schedule as times can vary). \nBook Your Trip > \nAs a Canal Boat Kid\, they may be asked to take on kid-appropriate deckhand chores\, discover how to care for mules\, find out what the captain’s job included\, greet other passengers when they board\, look for wildlife along the shores\, and more all while they explore the boat during its tour. \nThis is a kid-friendly tour\, not a kids-only tour. Adult passengers will enjoy hearing about life on and around the canal from our on-board tour guide as the boat makes its way up the canal. \nThis unique\, young-passenger-focused experience gets your kids out of the house (and off their devices) so they can engage with nature and the stories of our community\, state and nation\, making a lasting impression for all.

SUMMARY:Nellie Becker - A Titanic Story and Part of the 1912 Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Titanic sank in the frigid Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14-15\, 1912.\nThe tragic loss of over 1\,400 lives that night\, the failures of the great unsinkable ocean liner\, the insufficient lifeboats\, all would affect legislation of ship building and sea travel in the months and years to come. \nOver 700 survivors would return home and try to pick up the pieces. Many would suffer from the reverberations of that night for the rest of their lives\, with some experiencing alcoholism\, depression\, post traumatic stress\, even suicide. \nWith such an enormous tragedy playing a central role upon the world’s stage\, what was happening here\, in Bureau County? We’ll take a look at the photographs and stories that the lives of residents here revolved around. Newspaper stories will run the gamut from the ordinary: bids for the building of Matson Public Library were discussed and the architect’s proposal for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument were accepted ahead of its projected summer 1912 build; to the criminal: three masked highwaymen rob the train in Sheffield stealing $800 in cash and a diamond ring; to the scandalous: the front-page coverage of the divorce of the heroic doctor of the Cherry Mine disaster after his wife alleged she was the victim of domestic violence. \nFrom the sad\, to the humorous\, to the fashions and the politics\, we hope the exhibit gives you a better understanding of what life was like here in 1912. We hope you’ll join us in March for the exhibit and all the events we have planned for you! \nMuseum is opened Wednesday through Saturday\, noon to 5 pm. Self guided tours on Saturday at 2 pm and 4 pm. \n

SUMMARY:Blues Brothers Con: The Sequel
DESCRIPTION:Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi Return to Old Joliet Prison for Second Annual Blues Brothers Con\nJoliet Area Historical Museum pays tribute to the iconic Blues Brothers film on Saturday\, August 17th at Old Joliet Prison \nJOLIET\, Ill. – The Joliet Area Historical Museum will host its second annual Blues Brothers Con featuring actors Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi\, reprising their roles as The Blues Brothers at Old Joliet Prison on Saturday\, August 17th\, 2024. The festival will once again transform the 16-acre historic prison site into a tapestry of sights and sounds to honor the iconic Blues Brothers film – that was filmed on its grounds – as well as celebrate Blues music’s influence on the prison throughout its history. \nThe ‘Blues Brothers’ film is about passing on the love of Blues music to a new generation\, said Greg Peerbolte\, chief executive officer of the Joliet Area Historical Museum. The Prison’s connection to the Blues dates back to the 1932 recording of Memphis Minnie’s ‘Joliet Bound.’ Blues music helps us to confront – and heal – the Prison’s often difficult historic legacy. Following the incredible fan response to last year’s event\, we are extremely grateful to Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi Pisano and the Belushi family to pass on the film itself – and the music it cherishes – to new generations. \nAykroyd and Belushi will emcee a stacked lineup of iconic and diverse Chicago Blues performers featuring\, Curtis Salgado\, Ronnie Baker Brooks\, Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials\, and Al Spears & The Hurricane Project. \nThe evening will be appropriately capped off by a Maxwell Street-style Blues jam session where Dan\, Jim and other Blues Brothers alumni will take part in a special encore performance featuring hits from the film. Blues Brothers fans can also expect a variety of experiences\, appearances and one-of-a-kind photo ops throughout the day. \nProceeds from the event support the operations of the Joliet Area Historical Museum\, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit that has operated educational tours and community programs at the Old Joliet Prison Historic Site since 2018. The Old Joliet Prison is currently undergoing restorations but is still open to visitors daily for self-guided tours. \n  \nHotel & Ticket Packages \nOne-night stay + New Orleans North ticket (8/16) + Blues Brothers Con ticket (8/17) \nStarting at $185. Add more tickets if needed! SEE ALL HOTEL PACKAGES \nEvent Location: Inside the walls of Old Joliet Prison\, 1125 N. Collins St.\, Joliet\, Ill. SUMMARY:Brunch at Gaetano's Vault
DESCRIPTION:Gaetano’s Vault and NCI Artworks partner to offer an open-air Fine Art Brunch from 11 to 3pm on Sunday\,  August 18th. NCI ARTworks is partnering with Gaetano’s Vault co-owners Stephanie and Rick Wilkinson to offer patrons and passersby the opportunity to view and purchase art by local artists from the tri-county area during brunch service on August 18. Art will be displayed in the courtyard of Gaetano’s Vault. \nAccording to Julia Messina\, the executive director of NCI ARTworks\, this collaboration is the outcome of discussions about expanding opportunities for local artists to showcase their work in venues that attract new audiences for their art and provide an added value to the venues themselves. \nStreator is a special place for me personally\, as part of my family is from there\, stated Messina\, and professionally it is as well\, since NCI ARTworks was instrumental in facilitating the creation of the magnificent Heritage Park mural just down the block from Gaetano’s Vault\, which was designed and painted by the Westclox Studio muralists who painted the Heritage Park mural. \n

SUMMARY:"Right of Bang: After the Trigger is Pulled" Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Owning  a firearm is a responsibility. Carrying one is a bigger responsibility. But having to make a split-second decision to use up to and including deadly force to defend yourself or someone else\, determining who will go home to their loved ones that night\, is a decision no one wants to have  to face. With a growing amount of offenders being juveniles\, the burden of making that decision can become too much to bear for many. It may not affect you that day\, that week\, that month or that year but somehow\, someway\, that trauma will present itself and affect you physically\, mentally\, emotionally\, financially\, spiritually\, even impacting personal or professional relationships. It can even lead you to attempt or complete “the long-term solution for a short-term problem”\, something that’s all too common. Are you prepared for what comes after you pull the trigger\, commonly referred to as “Right of Bang”? \nTickets are $40. \n
