SUMMARY:CabinFest
DESCRIPTION:Learn and celebrate life on the Prairie in the 1800s at the Cragg Cabin that served as the county’s first tavern\, polling place\, and post office. Travelers were treated with courtesies and comforts of a frontier inn. Stage coach passengers and drovers moving cattle to Chicago stock yards over the Overland Trail which ran from Bloomington to Chicago often were treated as guests. It is thought that the cabin may have even been part of the Underground Railway (from 1831 to 1863). It was said hundreds of slaves found shelter under its roof on their way to freedom in the North. \nEvery year\, the first Saturday of June\, The Prairie Partners call on Partners and friends to help with the Cabin Festival celebrating a simpler time on the prairie. The group lectures to class visits and groups about life on the prairie in the 1800s. \n

SUMMARY:CCA President/CEO Speaks At Lemont Library
DESCRIPTION:This year the I&M Canal celebrates its 175th anniversary and Lemont\, its 150th. In particular\, she’ll discuss plans for the I&M Canal National Heritage Area and how you can become involved as a steward helping to ensure its continued survival for the benefit of future generations. \nSeats are limited – Register Here!

SUMMARY:Book Signing with Author Steven Decker
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the Canal Corridor Association on Saturday December 23rd 11:00am – 1:00pm for a book signing with author Steven Decker and his book Cambridge Street at the Lock 16 Café & Visitor Center\, 754 First Street LaSalle\, IL. \n \n“Cambridge Street is for the millions of immigrants from Italy and the world that came to America to give their families better lives\, they helped build our country\, feed its people and fight its wars. Now\, with the passing of years\, their bravery and sacrifices are being forgotten. We must not let that happen.” – Steven Decker \nThe Mafia\, bad government and high taxes forced the Tomaso family to leave Italy and the people they loved. They came to America in search of opportunity but found rejection and prejudice. Chicago\, sprawling and dirty\, was not like anything they could have dreamed or imagined. The family quickly learned that immigrants – especially Italians and\, worse\, Sicilians – were not wanted or welcomed. Love of family and trust in God held them together and\, somehow\, they survived. The Tomasos were finally content until early one morning when an act of terrible\, unforgivable violence was committed against them by their Italian countrymen. \nAuthor Steven Decker grew up in a large\, thriving Sicilian family on the north side of Chicago. He never forgot the stories about the struggles of his immigrant grandparents: How they survived terrible poverty\, life during Prohibition and their encounters with gangsters. \nFor more information call (815)220-1848.

SUMMARY:Dinner & a Little History: Coal\, Shale\, and Ironstone: The Geology & Paleontology of Mazon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, October 5th 2017 at the Lock 16 Cafe for our Dinner Lecture: Coal\, Shale\, and Ironstone: The Geology & Paleontology of Mazon Creek.  \n \nLocated in northeastern Illinois\, Mazon Creek\, is an incredible fossil array of associated Upper Carboniferous plants and animals. Considered to be among the world’s great Lagerstätten\, or Mother Lodes\, this site’s numerous and delicately preserved soft-bodied animals are rarely seen in the fossil record\, and many species have been singularly described from the deposit. Magnificent plant impressions\, many of them ferns (to some\, the quintessential prehistoric floral form) are beautifully preserved in iron carbonate nodules. The importance of Mazon Creek to understanding the story of our planet\, and specifically the Pennsylvanian Period\, was realized by science only in the mid-nineteenth century. Considerable research has been done since then\, perhaps providing the most comprehensive picture of life in the Late Paleozoic. \n  \n \nSpeaker Andrew Young is a visual artist who studied biology\, art history\, and studio art at the University of California\, Berkeley. In 2006\, he received an invitation to join an expedition to Antarctica to study the wildlife and document studies of the earthquakes and ice movement in the region. A continued fascination with the human relationship to the natural world led him to curate an exhibition in 2011entitled\, Indexing the World: invention\, abstraction and dissonance\, the 2012 publication of a book on Mazon Creek fossils of Illinois\, and a solo painting show with the Chicago Academy of Sciences. \nJust the lecture $7. Dinner and Lecture $29 for Non-Members\, $24 for Members. \nReservations are required. \nTo reserve CLICK HERE or call MarQuinta Moore (815) 220-1848 ext 1838. \nLock 16 Cafe – The Vintage Room \n
